On Friday, fifty-five students had the opportunity to meet in the Albany High Library to dialogue with Congressman Paul Tonko, who has served served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 2009, about his role in government and experiences as a public servant.
During his visit, Congressman Tonko fielded a variety of questions thoughtfully prepared by students in Albany High teacher Sean Fitzsimons’ US Government & Politics AP course. Our Falcons utilized the knowledge they are gaining in their coursework to solicit feedback on topics such as legislative priorities, policy-work and current challenges impacting communities here in New York State and beyond.
Here are a few specific questions asked of Congressman Tonko:
- What are specific bills you are working on right now?
- How do you balance the competing needs and priorities of your constituents?
- What strategies do you use to build support in Congress for the legislation that you sponsor or otherwise support?
As Congressman Tonko shared examples of how his role integrates into the democratic process, students were able to connect real-world examples with the concepts they are studying.
For example, students learned about legislation that is currently being developed to help individuals and families who have been impacted by various types of addiction, ranging from sports gambling to controlled substances.
Before wrapping up his time with the students, Congressman Tonko affirmed his commitment to pouring out his gifts for the betterment of his community and reminded the students how vital their role is as constituents.
Afterward, students had the opportunity to briefly connect with Congressman Tonko on a personal level, asking follow-up questions or simply sharing their appreciation for his visit.
