On Monday, our Falcons had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant world of comics as we celebrated Free Comic Book Day! Traditionally held on the first Saturday in May, this global event allows both devoted fans and curious newcomers to enjoy free comics.
At Albany High, we extended the celebration into a day filled with fun and creativity. The festivities featured themed stations, including a Marvel puzzle, comics decoupage coasters, zine making, origami, a Studio Ghibli movie screening and an after-school gaming tournament!
We were also thrilled to host a panel of individuals with professional experience in comics creation, distribution and promotion. They shared valuable insights and reflections with our Falcons, affirming comics is a genre with something for everyone!
Our panelists included:
- Nick Glindmyer: second-generation owner of Earthworld Comics in Albany
- Rob Kovach: an avid collector of comics
- Marcus Kwame Anderson: a creator and illustrator of the award-winning "Big Jim and the White Boy" and "The Black Panther Party: A Graphic Novel History", a collaboration with writer David F. Walker
- Jay Deitcher: a writer for multiple magazines/websites
- Jeff Newelt (virtual): a social media promoter for comics creators/contributor to magazines about comics
- Fabrice Sapolsky (virtual): founder of FairSquare Graphics, an independent comics publisher out of New York City; he's also a creator contributing to "One-Hit Wonder" and "Intertwined"
A heartfelt thank you goes to the Albany Fund for Education and Earthworld Comics for their support in making this incredible event possible. Special appreciation also goes to Albany High librarian Alicia Abdul for her exceptional coordination!
